Has anyone used a gentle leader on their dog? If so what are your feelings about them?
I have great danes and I used to use prong collars, recently my behaviorist suggested we change to gentle leaders. I am in the process of changing them over. My friend has danes and she says their necks are very sensitive and she does not like gentle leaders. I was wondering if I could get some opinions on these two type of collars?
I had a gentle leader, but prefer the prong collar. With a gentle leader you cannot correct the dog, and he would always paw at it, nearly scratching his eyes out. I didn't use it except for about twice. With the prong collar it doesn't hurt unless they're tugging, you know?
I've never used one, but you could also look into an easy walk harness.
Edit: I just read a few of the other comments, and people have mentioned "stabbing," a collapsed trachea, and spinal damage. Put the prong collar around your wrist or neck and tighten it a little. Does it hurt? No, it just pokes a little, but it does not "stab." If you use it properly you will not collapse the trachea, but you need to not pull with all your might. Also, if a gentle leader is tugged on (ie the dog startles and tries to run fast, or you stop abruptly, and they dog does not) the gentle leader causes whip lash, a prong collar does yank the head in the same way, so it causes less damage. I read somewhere about how a prong collar is more effective with less force meaning it is less damaging to their spine. Therefore a prong collar actually hurts your dog LESS than a gentle leader or choke collar. Really people, but a prong collar on yourself so you can see that they really do not hurt, though I admit that they certainly look scary.
