How do I get my dog used to his new doggy door?
He's so scared of it, he thinks he's trapped inside. Will he get used to it?
There are lots of different methods you can do use to try and get your dog used to the doggy door. The method that I've always found the most beneficial though is once you get the doggy door (or you get a new dog. We've had one doggy door for the past 20 years. The dogs and cats are the ones that change haha.) you go on the other side of the flap and hold it open. Call your dog through the opening. If they refuse, use a motivator like a treat or a toy. If you have another dog who is familiar or comfortable with a doggy door, that would be a great motivator as well.
If the motivator does not work the first time, you will have to reach through the doggy door, pick up your dog, and carry him through the doggy door. Now, go over to the other side of the doggy door, open the flap, and repeat the scenario. Usually they are much more apt to go through the doggy door to get in the house than to go outside the first few times I've noticed.
After a while, you're dog may begin to realize that the doggy door is the method of getting outside, but you may run into the problem of him waiting for you to open the doggy door, or to carry him through it. In that case, the best option is to push your dog halfway through the door, allowing the flap to rest on him. He needs to get the motion and the feeling of going through the door and feeling the flap resting on his back.
After two or three days, the doggy door will probably be his best friend, trust me.
