Hiking with dog, please help.?
ok, I live in Cave Creek, Arizona, and I go hiking a lot now. My boxer/beagle mix likes to go hiking with me in the mountains, but always ends up stepping on Teddy Bear Cholla or getting those small cactus burrs in her pads. She lets me pull them out, but then refuses to walk after everything is out. Is there anything I can do for her feet? I've seen like heat protectors for their feet, but nothing that will prevent the cactus from sticking in her foot. When I hike with her she gets hot REALLY quickly (short hair, light colors to her coat). I carry water for her and myself and I freeze bandanas for her but that only lasts so long. Periodically I will stop and rub her down with ice and it seems to help but then it only seems to make her worse and she ends up just lying down. Anything I can buy to keep her cool. I stop when she needs to, and I don't force her. And she loves to go hiking, plus I feel safe with her with me. It's something she loves to do. Please help. thanks
I live 100 miles north of you and we have hiking dogs too. There are boots that will help a lot with the cactus and protect their pads from walking on hot rocks. I have muttluks for all my dogs, but there are many other types of boot available. There are cooling vests you can get for dogs too. I have never used them, but I see dogs with them on frequently at dog shows in Arizona. We just try to be done hiking by 8AM in the summer months, carry a lot of water, and when possible choose trails that have streams where they can cool off. However, we do not take them very often through these months unless we are going to higher elevations. If she is getting so hot she is just laying down, then she isn't loving it that day. Better to leave her at home if it is going to be a scorcher.
