High energy dog left at home?
To start off, I'm a 22 year old female. Recently, I've been considering getting a large dog. I have the financial means to care for one, patience, some experience, and can offer it a large yard with complete access to my house. My only problem is that I often work 7 hour days that a dog would likely be left at home.
It would NOT be left at home in a CRATE but with free-roam, plenty of water, toys etc. I also like jogging (live an active lifestyle) and can devote a couple hour-long walks (AM & PM) and all my time at home to a dog.
I guess what I'm asking is can a large or high-energy dog (no puppies!) be sufficiently kept home alone 7 hours a day if adequately "taken care of" the rest of the time?
Thanks!
You will have one seriously high strung dog on your hands. Instead of leaving him at home, a doggie day care would be a far better option.
I have a friend with a Standard Poodle and if this dog was left home for 7+ hours regularly, the entire house would be destroyed and the dog would never ever get tired. Even with daycare during many days, the dog is still very very active and out of control.
When working long hours regularly, it's also very hard to keep up on training - another hurdle you'll face.
With a high activity dog, 'walks' aren't enough activity. It's not aerobic enough and won't burn off energy enough. My 12lb dog goes for a 4 mile walk (about an hour) and comes home and tears around MORE HYPER than before. Activity like fetch, tag, frisbee, hide & seek, and brain games tire her out.
In short, yes, you can do it, but I'd recommend out of the home care during the day and an activity that works both mind & body.
