My sun conure has begun shredding his bed. Why?
My sun conure has recently started shredding his bed. The bed is a soft, plush triangle and he absolutely loves it.
I noticed the shredding a few weeks ago, but the bed was rather old so I thought it was just because it was getting ratty. However we bought him a new one two days ago and today I found him sitting in it in the middle of the afternoon, very uncommon for him, just shredding it. We've had him for about 4 years and he's never done this before. He's shredded his toys but never his bed. Why now?
He has access to a number of things to shred including his favorite shredding material. Also sun conures are supposed to have beds or nesting boxes. The bed we bought him especialy for sun conures and the one that all the books say to buy. And, like I said, he's had the bed for four years and he loves his, even defends it.
The bed is one of the ones that hangs from the top of his cage. He also uses it every night.
shredding things is a mating instinct it might be going through a hormonal time and wants to pretend to build a nest or he may just be playing with the bed, conures are very active shredders, u might want to supply some cardboard in his cage that he can chew up, goodluck and check out www.parrotcentral.net for more bird info
